I’ve been too busy to write on Pixelsumo lately, normal service will resume at the end of April / start of May.
I’ve been working on personal projects, such as the 3d soundscape with Owen Lloyd for the Future of Sound tour. Goldsmiths was full booked with 300 people (shown above). Here are some photos. Video podcasts available shortly I’m told.
I’ve also been creating two interactive exhibits for the Wellcome Collection (at Ico Design), a new £30 million public venue exploring the connections between medicine, life and art, providing radical insights into wellbeing and the human condition. Opening in the summer, the six-storey building will house at least 1500 exhibits across three galleries, the first venue of its kind in the UK. One exhibit is based on medical techniques used to explore the body and the other examines the subject of Biometrics, specifically the processes of face recognition, beyond its orthodox applications.
So here are some things I would have liked to write about, made into a shorter summary…
ATTENDED
‘Designing Playful Outdoor Spaces‘ (Feb) was an interesting seminar I attended about creating playgrounds for children, run by Play England. I took away lots of notes, and related them to my ideas about exploring an interaction design approach to playgrounds. Posts about digital technology in playgrounds coming soon.
The Science of Spying opened at the Science Museum. Here are my photos from the visit. Some playful installations from the likes of AllofUs and pickledonion, and conceptual products from Dunne & Raby, Troika plus many many more. Worth a visit.
I went to the British Toy Fair, a trade show for companies to show their new products to press and buyers. Here are a few of my photos. I was hoping to see some new and interesting approaches to interaction and toy design, but was largely disappointed. The toys coming out this year are the same ideas from 10 years ago, just rebranded and updated. I have a feeling that this was probably the wrong show to see toy innovation, I’m sure there are others. This is a very over crowded and diluted marketplace. This remote control flying dragonfly was a lot of fun though (video).
United Visual Artists gave a talk at Kinetica that showed the process behind some of their less commercial work. It was great to see the software behind their installation and performance work. A very detailed piece of software that lets them build an interactive 3d prototype of the installation, aiding them before the physical build. More on this later.
