Picture House at Belsay Hall

Picture House

I have just returned from Belsay Hall (near Newcastle) for the launch of Picture House, which “sees the magnificent empty and austere nineteenth century Hall, fourteenth century castle and grade one listed gardens transformed by film directors, sound and music producers, performers, artists and fashion designers”.

Picture House is curated for English Heritage by Judith King with three digital commissions curated by Juha Huuskonen for Dott07. These three works are by Golan Levin, United Visual Artists and a partnership between Adam Somlai-Fischer and Bengt Sjölén. I will write about these commissions later.

9 months ago I was fortunate enough to be at Belsay to assist Golan with a few details, and have followed the development of the other digital works since. On my second visit to Belsay for the launch, I had no idea what to expect from the other artworks on display. I was very pleasantly surprised. The whole collection is beautiful, the setting is magnificent and the artists have each responded in their own way to the atmosphere of Belsay through reflections of history and an empty house.

The Picture House exhibition runs until 30th September 2007 and I can highly recommend it if you are able to get to north England.

Here are my photos.

Viktor and Rolf

(above) Fashion duo Viktor and Rolf presented, for the first time in England, one of their romantic, stunningly beautiful silver coated ballgowns set upon a silvered mannequin and pedestal, a direct reference to the greek -style statues that once stood in the elegant Belsay Pillar Hall.

(3 images below) Geraldine Pilgrim has worked extensively within the theatrical world and has created a series of mysterious installations for three of the upper bedrooms. Her installation is a new site specific work, which includes forests, ghosts and hudreds of tea cups - all of which allude to the dreams of a young girl in the night before her coming out party.
