Ferrofluid

Sachiko

If you aren’t familiar with the beautiful work of Sachiko Kodama then you are missing out. These amazing works use the black magnetic fluid called Ferrofluid. I suggest you take a look at this collection of work.

I have previously seen a number of projects also using this fluid and wanted to share a few of them with you.

Toke
Magnetic Liquied Type, by Toke Oliver Barter, creates letters in the fluid using a matrix of magnets. As you type on the keyboard, an 8×8 black & white grid on the screen turns into that character. Light sensors fixed to the monitor read each grid position and turn the magnets on and off, revealing each letter. Video and pics here. Toke created this whilst at Royal College of Art 2004.

Snoil
SnOil by Martin Frey was created for the Sensitive Skins module at UDK Berlin. The demonstration video shows a game of snake, using tilt sensors within the object and scrolling text. Martin has a great blog (in German) showing development of the electronics and experiments with the ferrofluid.
