Death Before Disko, by Herwig Weiser, is a beautifully crafted object, tube like in shape with speakers at each end. In the centre is a mirrorball-like sphere containing magnets. Stuck to this on the outside is ferrofluid, resembling a rotating liquid which is sculpturally dynamic. For this exhibition, an audio feed from the shop DJ was fed into the device and a Kaos pad allowed visitors to control the audio levels and the spinning of the fluid ball and its form.
“With the proliferation of digital technology, slick design features have begun to distance many users from the hardware components of their laptops and stereos. As we view technology in increasingly superficial ways, Death Before Disko 3.1 seeks to bring us right back to those raw components, exposing the innards of our technology in all their complexity and beauty. The work plays on associations with popular media culture by sculpting not with the fetishized end results of informational transport technology, but the material units of its most basic transactions. These conductive and structural substances, plastics, metals, magnetic liquids and other rendered materials cease to be simply a means to an end and are revealed as the supportive backing technology and the highly aesthetic result of the artwork, simultaneously“.
